The Samaria Gorge (45 km) is Europe's most famous canyon with a length of 15 km and it is part of the European path E4. It is created by the river flowing between the main volumes of the White Mountains and Mount Volakias. The gorge has two natural entrances, one on the Mount of Omalos in an altitude of 1227m, where the route starts and the other one where it ends at the village of Sfakia, and more specificall at Agia Roumeli. Its length reaches 15Km and it takes 5-7 hours to cross.
The most famous point of the gorge is "Doors or Sheds", as its sides reach just 4m. and a height of 500m. It is one of the first National Forests in Greece in 1962, where at first its use here as a shelter for the threatened Cretan goat known as kri-kri, which is currently restricted to Samaria, Thodorou Island and other islands in different parts of Greece. In the gorge and in the surrounding area there are many endemic species of fauna and flora.
Since 1981, it has joined the UNESCO World Heritage Site (MAB: Man & Biosphere) to promote and protect valuable sites for humans.
