Kournas Lake is the only natural lake in Crete, situated between the slopes of the White Mountains and the plain of Georgioupolis. It is a very important ecosystem since it has plenty of fresh water throughout the year. The lake's waters are transported to the beach of Kavros through its overflow, namely the river Delphina.
Because of its ecological value, the lake has been part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Many species of waterfowl such as waterfowl, ducks, herons and cormorants are found here. Also, Lake Kournas has always been well known for its eels, which still exist in significant populations.
The wetland also hosts waterfowls and turtles. Unfortunately, over the last few years, populations of goldfish have been raised which is speculated that they were thrown by unconscious people and their growing population has significantly disrupted this closed ecosystem.
